Family owned and operated since 2002, The Plenus Group creates a varied line of prepared and ready-to-heat foods, specializing in soups and seafood dishes sold under the Boston Chowda and East Coast Gourmet brands. The Plenus Group prides itself on using only the freshest and highest quality ingredients. Their products are sold in fine stores and restaurants, and supermarkets across the country.
The Plenus Group wanted to implement far-reaching energy efficiency projects at its primary kitchen and distribution center in Lowell, MA. Strict operation and climate controls were an absolute requirement, as were transparency and easy implementation. With incentives and oversight from National Grid, the company selected the Remote Site Manager (RSM) system from National Resource Management. With RSM, the Plenus Group was able to retrofit on top of 12 existing refrigeration zones and HVAC equipment without expensive downtime or systems replacement. Simultaneously, RSM controls and monitoring have improved product integrity, reduced maintenance costs and provided sophisticated early warning of equipment malfunctions. Managers and maintenance personnel can log in at any time, from anywhere in the world, and see exactly how the equipment is running.
As a result, the company saw immediate energy savings while improving the accuracy and consistency of temperature controls and quality assurance. In the first year after implementation, the affected refrigeration saw an annual reduction of 371,161 kWh from baseline as well as significant reduction in HVAC runtimes.
Thanks to their dedication to energy efficiency, the Plenus Group has enhanced its already-high quality standards - a commitment to customers who keep coming back for more “soup and other great stuff.”
