Rhode Island’s Largest Private Company Recognized for Its Commitment to Achieving Significant Energy Savings

LEXINGTON, MA – Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships (NEEP) has announced that FM Global, one of the world’s largest commercial property insurers, will be recognized as a ‘Business Leader for Energy Efficiency’ at the Northeast Energy Efficiency Summit in Warwick, RI on June 8, 2011. Nominated by National Grid, the mutual insurance company is being honored for its tremendous effort in keeping energy efficiency a guiding principle throughout the construction of its 366,660 sq. ft., corporate headquarters based in Johnston, RI. Using many energy-efficient measures, FM Global conserves more than 3 million kWh per year—a cost savings of more than $350,000—which, in large part, ranks the office building among Rhode Island’s greenest.

Prior to opening its new corporate headquarters in 2009, FM Global worked with National Grid’s Comprehensive Design Analysis (CDA) Program to identify energy conservation opportunities such as:

  • Evaporative cooled compressor which uses water to cool the condenser
  • Variable frequency drives and lighting controls that reduce energy during low-use periods
  • EMS (Energy Management System) monitoring and high-efficiency motors for the HVAC system
  • Highly-efficient office lighting
  • Use of energy efficient gas boilers, water heaters and wall insulation
  • Reflective roof coating that captures natural sunlight

These features make the new complex 40 percent more energy efficient than FM Global’s previous office building and 23 percent more energy efficient than similar buildings designed to standard energy requirements. Additionally, the building raises water efficiency, improves air quality and harvests natural daylight.

"National Grid is pleased that we could assist FM Global with our energy efficiency programs to improve their carbon reduction and energy savings goals," said Edward White, vice president of Customer & Business Strategy for National Grid. "We are committed to helping customers save energy, and through our collective power of action, work together for significant environmental benefits."

“For more than 175 years, we’ve believed it’s vitally important to construct buildings that are built to last, minimize environmental impact, and promote the health and wellness of employees who work in them,” said Don Oldmixon, vice president of real estate for FM Global.”

“NEEP is proud to recognize FM Global and National Grid for their collaborative success in making efficiency matter,” said Sue Coakley, Executive Director of NEEP. “FM Global provides an excellent example of how energy efficient measures can improve a company’s bottom line, contribute to economic growth and reduce environmental impact. The company is a model for others to follow.”

FM Global will be recognized, along with 11 other Northeast Energy Efficiency Business Leaders at the 2011 Northeast Energy Efficiency Summit.  Members of the media are invited to attend at no charge.  For more information about the Summit and Business Leaders Recognition program, please visit http://neep.org/neep-summit.
