Mall Management Company Recognized for Its Commitment to Achieving Significant Energy Savings

LEXINGTON, MA – Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships (NEEP) has announced that the Westfield Group will be recognized as a ‘Business Leader for Energy Efficiency’ at the Northeast Energy Efficiency Summit in Warwick, RI on June 8, 2011. Sponsored by the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund in partnership with The United Illuminating Company, the owner and property manager of the Westfield Trumbull Shopping Center is being honored for its continued efforts to advance energy efficiency in their Connecticut property which have resulted in annual energy savings of over 1,467,275 kWh, and cost savings of $250,395.  Westfield Group and The United Illuminating Company were able to build and leverage a very productive working relationship from the early stages of the project that contributed to this success; measurable by metrics in addition to the energy efficiency results and financial benefits of incentives and savings.

As part of a $35-million-dollar revitalization project, and in consultation with The United Illuminating Company, the Westfield Group implemented several energy efficiency measures that include:

  • Replacing the Center’s traditional rooftop HVAC system with a higher efficiency central plant system that uses chilled water and fan coil units to cool the shopping center;
  • Numerous smart building features, including building automation that connects into the Westfield portfolio network, hand dryers in bathrooms and lounges, waterless urinals, insulated low e-glass in the Dining Terrace and even drought-tolerant plants throughout the center’s landscaping;
  • Installation of approximately 800 new energy-efficient lamps
  • New “soft start” escalator motors that adjust the power according to foot traffic
  • Installation of a reflective white membrane on the roof, creating a “cool roof” that holds less heat and reduces the load on the air conditioning system

“The Westfield Group has demonstrated how energy efficient investments are so significant in a company meeting its triple bottom line,” said Jeff Gaudiosi, Vice-Chairperson of the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund.  Not only has the company been able to save money through reduced energy use, critical for every company in this economic climate, but it has also shown how energy efficiency has helped streamline its operations.”

“NEEP is proud to recognize the Westfield Group, Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund, and The United Illuminating Co. for their collaborative success and commitment to energy efficiency,” said Sue Coakley, Executive Director of NEEP.  “The Westfield Group provides an excellent example of how energy efficient measures can improve a company’s bottom line, contribute to economic growth and reduce environmental impact.”
