LEXINGTON, MA – Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships (NEEP) has announced that Building & Land Technology (BLT) will be recognized as a ‘Business Leader for Energy Efficiency’ at the Northeast Energy Efficiency Summit in Warwick, RI on June 8, 2011. Nominated by the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund in partnership with Yankee Gas, BLT is being honored for its expansive efforts to accelerate energy efficiency in its mixed-use facilities which have resulted in annual energy cost savings of over $70,000.
The second-generation real estate development company, located in Stamford, CT, successfully combined today’s energy efficiency technology with historic architectural design through the recent renovation of The Lofts at Yale and Towne, a 225-unit rental apartment complex located at the 100-year-old Yale Lock factory. Through its collaboration with the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund, Yankee Gas, and Connecticut Light & Power, participating in the Energy Conscious Blueprint Program and the Energy Opportunities Program on several projects, BLT has managed to develop and preserve an historic building which is 10 percent more efficient than the required building energy code specifications.
Much of the energy savings achieved are due to the installation of high efficiency natural gas fired condensing boilers that provide heat to the building. Additionally more than 53,000 square feet of 1 inch thick, insulated Low “E” glass was installed to maximize efficiency and preserve The Lofts’ historic 9 foot ft. high windows. Other design measures included high efficiency lighting in the parking garage and automated heating systems maximizing various climate controls, and hot water pumps. Operations of the building’s efficiency measures are maintained through the facility’s advanced Building Management System.
“Building & Land Technology has demonstrated how energy efficient investments are so significant in a company meeting its triple bottom line (environmental, economic, and social),” said Richard Steeves, Chairperson of the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund. “Not only has the company been able to save money through reduced energy use, critical for every company in this economic climate, but it has also shown how energy efficiency has helped streamline its operations.”
“The Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund in partnership with Yankee Gas has enjoyed its work with Building & Land Technology, a company that can prove that efficiency investments make smart business sense,” said Larry Winchell of Yankee Gas. “The initiatives taken by BLT exemplify the company’s commitment to sustainability and shows how technology can be perfectly matched with historic design.”
“NEEP is proud to recognize Building & Land Technology and the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund in partnership with Yankee Gas for their collaborative success and commitment to energy efficiency,” said Sue Coakley, Executive Director of NEEP. “ BLT provides an excellent example of how energy efficient measures can improve a company’s bottom line, contribute to economic growth and reduce environmental impact.”
