Building Energy Codes

NEEP coordinates engagement between program sponsors and their industry partners, including manufacturers and retailers, to identify and develop cooperative promotions aimed at increasing the sales of ENERGY STAR qualified lighting, appliances, and consumer electronics. By working with these industry players to incentivize stocking practices, sales and marketing at the upper spectrum of the distribution stream (i.e. ‘upstream'), utility efficiency programs are better able to make purchasing high efficiency units more attractive to end users. Below are a selection of NEEP's Retail Products Upstream Activities:

Top Ten

TopTen USA is a nonprofit organization that identifies and publicizes the most energy-efficient products on the market. We make it easy for consumers to find the most energy- and money-saving models, which in turn encourages manufacturing innovations that will make products in the United States even more energy-efficient.

High Efficiency Consumer Electronics (Televisions)

Consumer Electronics represent the fastest growing sector of residential energy use. For years, programs avoided these products because energy use by individual products remained very small compared to the typical household appliances (refrigerator, clothes washer, room air conditioner). Television use and technologies, for example, have changed significantly over the past several years. Today, televisions are far more common, larger, more energy intensive and watched more frequently, creating a new opportunity for efficiency programs to save energy. Programs have recognized this reality and are poised to engage this market.

Due to several market factors however, customer level coupons and rebates are a problematic strategy for efficiency programs. NEEP recognized these issues and worked with partner organizations from the west coast to introduce a midstream approach to this sector. It is recognized that electronics retailers are the key market actor in this supply chain and the entities that can drive the most cost effective sales. NEEP is currently in discussions with the retailer community, third party contractors, and regional efficiency programs to create a system that drives retailers to sell the highest efficiency televisions.
