Energy Saving Tips for Schools

How much are we paying in energy costs when we're not looking?

Switch off computers and electronics when they are not in use.
A computer and monitor in an idle state, left on 12 hours a day, 362 days a year will use about $80 worth of electricity. A copier left on all day and night costs more than $150 per year
Don't leave the water running and check faucets and pipes for leaks.
You could be wasting thousands of gallons of water per month! A leaking faucet (20 drips per minute) costs $3.15 year
Use Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) bulbs.
Each CFL you install can save you $30 to $60 over the bulb's life

Replace air filters regularly and follow maintenance schedules for furnace and air-conditioning equipment.
Replacing a dirty air filter can save money by reducing the amount of electricity used (because there is less resistance to airflow with a clean filter)
Train your building operators.
Trained building operators know how to save tremendous amounts of energy and money - sometimes as much as 20% of annual energy costs

Encourage your teachers and students to be energy conscious!
Their participation is invaluable! Consider offering a small reward or incentive to the class or school who saves the most energy
