Best Practice Guide: Enhancing Heat Pump Performance Data

The availability of accessible, detailed, and high-quality performance data is necessary to validate performance of high efficiency technology. This is particularly true for technology like air source heat pumps (ASHP), which are gaining widespread acceptance amongst stakeholders due to their potential to increase utility cost savings, affordability for all homeowners, home comfort, and other non-energy benefits such as grid resiliency and reliability. This report is specifically studying the availability of high-quality performance data for ASHPs, a class of high-performance Heating Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) equipment. The market currently makes a range of performance data available across a variety of sources, including the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) Directory, NEEP Cold Climate Air Source Heat Pump (ccASHP) List, manufacturer-published data, and others; however, several types of key performance data are not consistently available for all heat pump models across the sources.
