
Joe O’Brien-Applegate has worked in energy efficiency, electrification, and utility policy since 2017, serving as an advocate and subject matter expert throughout the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Midwest. At NEEP, he provides expertise in technical policy analysis and rate design issues as Manager, Policy and Programs. He has experience in building performance standards, utility energy efficiency programs, geothermal heating and cooling, and policy modeling.
Prior to NEEP Joe worked for the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) as Eastern Equitable Building Decarbonization Advocate and as an Energy Policy Analyst at the Pace Energy and Climate Center.
Joe holds a B.A. in International Relations with a minor in Physics from the College of William & Mary and an M.S. in Environmental Policy from Bard College.
Q: What is one thing you cannot live without?
A: Bicycles! I'm an avid mountain biker, and former road and cyclocross racer.
Q: What book is currently on your nightstand?
A: White Malice by Susan Williams and Alice Knott by Blake Butler.
Q: If you weren't working at NEEP, what other job would you have?
A: I've worked as a bicycle mechanic, an airplane mechanic, and an upholsterer, so probably one of those.
