Hasbro Inc. manufactures games and puzzles including Monopoly, the Game of Life, Battleship, Candy Land, and Chutes and Ladders at their 1.1 million square foot facility in East Longmeadow, Mass. Hasbro’s dedication to improving their efficiency has enabled them to maintain game and puzzle production in the United States at a time when most other toy and game manufacturers have moved production overseas.
Hasbro has had a longstanding commitment to corporate social responsibility. This commitment shows up in a wide variety of areas, including our environmental initiatives. For nearly 20 years, Hasbro has been an active participant in programs to improve the company’s energy efficiency. Since 1989, the company has taken advantage of National Grid’s incentive programs for upgrades to:
- Lighting and lighting controls
- Air compressor staging and sequencing
- Centralized chiller plant, cooling tower staging
- Molding machine variable frequency drives
- Occupancy-based heating/cooling
- High speed roll-up doors
Hasbro recently announced a plan to improve productivity and efficiency by investing $10 million – and possibly up to $40 million -- in new equipment including injection molding machines and high-speed assembly lines. Additionally, Hasbro has also increased their roof insulation and is presently exploring photovoltaic options. The company is also currently involved in a pilot program with National Grid to automate their response to ISO New England’s requests for load reduction.
To monitor energy use and ensure goals are met, Hasbro has both a Sustainability Team and an Energy Conservation Team at its East Longmeadow facility. These groups are made of up designated energy “champions” who meet monthly to track, document and report progress toward yearly energy reduction goals. In addition, each manufacturing work center has a “lean” team responsible for identifying and implementing energy conservation opportunities.
