Kelly O’Connell joined NEEP in December of 2023 as Senior Associate, Community Solutions. She is passionate about developing and implementing energy efficiency solutions with a community-centered and equitable approach. In this role, she works collaboratively with a wide array of stakeholders, providing technical assistance, creating a regional network of communities, and supporting the implementation of decarbonization and electrification projects.

Prior to joining NEEP, Kelly was with the Clean Energy States Alliance (CESA) supporting their low- and moderate-income (LMI) solar work through the Solar with Justice project and multifamily affordable housing solar and solar+storage through its BIL & IRA Implementation project. There, she conducted stakeholder engagement, developing meaningful relationships and collaboration between community-based organizations (CBOs) and state energy agencies. She was also previously employed with the government affairs team at Plug Power, working to access funding for green hydrogen development and expansion projects under the BIL and IRA.

Kelly holds an MPA in Environmental Science and Policy from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, graduating in 2023. She received her BA in Political Science and Spanish from Villanova University. There, she also minored in Sustainability Studies and Latin American Studies in line with her interests and her concern for environmental issues on a global scale.

 

Q: What book is currently on your nightstand?

A: On my virtual nightstand is the audiobook of Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer.

Q: What is your favorite thing about NEEP?

A: Working with other mission-driven individuals who share a passion for advancing climate and energy initiatives.

Q: If you weren't working at NEEP, what other job would you have?

A: A travel tour guide for seniors. I love talking to older adults and traveling to new places!
