NEEP Recognizes Boston College as 2013 Northeast Business Leader for Energy Efficiency

Boston College is lauded for fostering the economy and protecting the environment through energy efficiency

Newton, MA, August 21, 2013Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships (NEEP) has announced that Boston College (BC) has been recognized as a ‘Northeast Business Leader for Energy Efficiency’. Nominated by National Grid, the college is being honored for its continued efforts to advance energy efficiency in its operations which have resulted in annual energy savings of over two million kWh, and cost savings of over $284,000.

The Northeast Business Leaders for Energy Efficiency recognition program highlights the accomplishments of organizations that are participating in energy efficiency programs across the region.

Partnering with NSTAR, BC completed lighting projects in areas totaling over a half-million square feet, including athletic and administrative buildings. The projects included interior and exterior lighting and controls, and replacement of existing fixtures with high efficiency fluorescent or LED options. Savings from these projects alone total over one million kWh, with other savings also realized through reduced cooling loads in the summer.

BC is also updating its HVAC building controls and sequences to take advantage of modern efficiency measures. These upgrades save electricity, chilled water, steam, hot water and natural gas. An upgraded 370,000 square foot 650 Boiler Horsepower Steam plant at the Newton campus now includes efficient steam boilers, with fully automated load management capabilities. This plant was also converted from oil to natural gas.

“NEEP is proud to recognize Boston College for their success and commitment to energy efficiency,” said Jim O’Reilly, Acting Executive Director of NEEP. “Boston College provides an excellent example of how energy efficient measures can achieve substantial savings while reducing environmental impact.”
