For more than 25 years, PTI has provided nondestructive testing services to machine shops serving the aerospace and medical industries. Based in Enfield, CT, the company’s numerous services include coatings and adhesive bonding as well as precision cleaning and cleanliness testing. PTI is a "one stop shop," providing quality service and quick turnarounds to its customers.
PTI has participated in numerous energy efficiency programs and initiatives offered through the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund and Connecticut Light & Power. In conjunction with the Energy Opportunities program, the company recently installed two high-efficiency, CNC-based, robotic shot peening machines which are used in the process of increasing the fatigue life of metal parts. Each machine has a single, integrated compressed air nozzle, which uses less energy than the standard four-nozzle machines. One of only a few companies with this technology, PTI was able to expand their market share by 15 percent after installation thanks to additional production capacity.
Through other incentive programs PTI has also installed brighter high-efficiency lighting, replaced an air compressor with a more energy efficient model and participated in “lean manufacturing” initiatives designed to streamline product flow, eliminate or reduce waste, improve production efficiency and reduce electrical energy consumption.
These initiatives have led to reduced operating costs – especially its electric bill – and increased production capacity allowing the company to maintain a competitive edge in the market. PTI has seen a lifetime energy savings of 26,417,798 kWh and an annual energy savings of 1,860,000 kWh. Encouraged by these results, senior managers have agreed to reduce PTI’s energy consumption by 10 percent over the course of one year. They are also taking additional measures to reduce waste, carbon emission and water consumption.
