The University of Bridgeport is an international institution, with 25 percent of students coming from overseas that offers career-oriented undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees for people seeking personal and professional growth. The University is dedicated to promoting global citizenship and a commitment to public service.

During the mid 1990s, the University of Bridgeport (UB) began to proactively address the implementation of energy efficiency and peak demand reducing measures and technologies. After the latter part of the decade brought hard economic times and declining enrollment, a strong partnership between the University, the United Illuminating Company (UI), and the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund (CEEF) facilitated UB’s revitalization.

Since 2000, the University has witnessed their enrollment soar from less than 2,000 students to over 4,700 while their electric consumption has increased by only 13 percent. UB has invested over two million dollars upgrading the energy efficiency of campus facilities through:

  • High efficiency lighting system and controls
  • High efficiency HVAC features including new chillers and cooling towers
  • High efficiency ice storage system
  • Energy management systems  

In addition, the University will soon be partnering with the Lighting Research Center, CEEF and UI in a pilot program designed to field test day-lighting controls UB has also have been actively consolidating facility use and renovating buildings to minimize energy consumption. Future projects include the renovation of the Dental Building and the upgrading and expansion of the University’s energy management system.
